A novel way to remove a broken intramedullary nail

چکیده
BACKGROUND Removal of broken intramedullary nails can prove challenging and several techniques have been suggested to achieve retrieval.1 The increasing use of retrograde nails for calcaneotalotibial arthrodesis has a particular problem: the cannulation is often too narrow to allow passage of hooks or other commonly used extraction devices.2 We propose a method using equipment that is readily available to aid removal of a deeply placed proximal fragment.

A simple method for removal of the distal segment of a broken femoral intramedullary nail: a case report.
ABSTRACT We report a method for removing the distal segment of a broken locked intramedullary nail secondary to nonunion of the femur following radiotherapy for fibromatosis. A Kirschner wire with one tip fashioned into a hook was used to remove the distal segment without opening with the nonunion site. Details of the procedure are described. KEY WORDS Broken intramedullary nail, removal of d...
متن کاملExtraction of broken interlocking tibial nail without opening the fracture - Nail in Nail technique: A simpler and cost effective solution
The removal of the distal fragment of broken intramedullary nail often poses an important technical challenge. Many methods have been published on the removal of the distal piece of a broken distal closed section intramedullary nail that involve the use of hooks, olive wires or special instruments that are often not available to the general orthopedist working in a smaller setup. Additionally, ...
متن کاملRemoval of a broken distal closed section intramedullary nail: report of a case using a simple method.
A simple method to remove a broken distal closed section intramedullary nail is presented. The surgical technique and a case report are described. This technique eliminates the need for an additional exposure, other than that required to insert the nail, or any specialized equipment.

Removal of hardware in orthopaedic surgery is usually encountered in revision fracture surgery for non union, mal union, infection and peri-implant failure. If the hardware has broken this can make revision surgery even more demanding. Numerous techniques have been described to facilitate implant removal. A broken femoral nail is not an uncommon presentation of a delayed union or a non union. W...
متن کاملRemoval of a Broken Cannulated Intramedullary Nail: Review of the Literature and a Case Report of a New Technique
Nonunion of long bones fixed with nails may result in implant failure. Removal of a broken intramedullary nail may be a real challenge. Many methods have been described to allow for removal of the broken piece of the nail. In this paper, we are reviewing the different techniques to extract a broken nail, classifying them into different subsets, and describing a new technique that we used to rem...
